Overview

As a Specialty Surgery Technician at the Animal Cancer & Referral Center in The Woodlands, you will own anesthesia, surgical assistance, and post-operative care for complex oncologic and soft tissue procedures. Working alongside our double-boarded Surgical Oncology team, you will manage ventilators, arterial blood pressure, and advanced monitoring in a referral hospital setting. You will collaborate with Oncology, ICU, and Specialty Services to deliver exceptional patient outcomes. This role offers the chance to master chest tube placement, epidurals, and RECOVER CPR while advancing your technical skillset.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Prepare patients for surgery and assist throughout the perioperative process, calculating anesthetic protocols and CRIs.
  • 2Induce, monitor, and recover anesthesia patients, managing ventilators, arterial blood pressure, ECG, temperature, and advanced anesthesia parameters.
  • 3Assist with CT imaging and specialty diagnostic procedures, positioning patients and operating imaging equipment.
  • 4Prepare and maintain surgical packs, instruments, and sterile equipment, ensuring a sterile field for each procedure.
  • 5Place IV catheters and perform advanced venipuncture for blood sampling and transfusion therapy.
  • 6Assist with chest tubes, urinary catheters, feeding tubes, and blood transfusions, providing advanced patient care procedures.
  • 7Monitor hospitalized and post-operative patients, documenting vitals and interveneing when complications arise.
  • 8Collect and process laboratory samples, running in-house diagnostics and preparing samples for external labs.
  • 9Educate clients and provide compassionate support throughout the surgical journey, explaining procedures and recovery plans.
  • 10Collaborate closely with Surgery, Oncology, and ICU teams, advocating for patients and delivering exceptional specialty care.

Requirements9

  • 15+ years of veterinary technician experience in specialty, emergency, ICU, anesthesia, or advanced general practice.
  • 2LVT/CVT or VTS credential preferred, with advanced anesthesia experience strongly preferred.
  • 3Experience with ventilator management, arterial blood pressure monitoring, and complex anesthetic protocols.
  • 4Proficiency in IV catheter placement, advanced venipuncture, and blood transfusion therapy.
  • 5Familiarity with CT imaging, surgical instrumentation, and sterile technique.
  • 6Strong drug calculation skills and attention to detail in high-pressure situations.
  • 7Ability to work four 10-hour shifts, including infrequent weekends, with overtime opportunities.
  • 8Prior experience with chest tube placement, epidurals, and local anesthetic blocks is a plus.
  • 9Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in specialty medicine.
