Overview
You will own daily patient flow and surgical support in the Ophthalmology Department at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, a leader in specialized companion animal care. Work directly with the Ophthalmologist, coordinating appointments, diagnostics, and procedures while developing advanced skills in veterinary ophthalmology. You will join a collaborative team of specialists across cardiology, oncology, and neurology, using EzyVet for medical records. This role combines client communication, technical patient care, and surgical preparation, offering hands-on experience in a high-caseload specialty environment.
What You'll Do10
- 1Coordinate the daily flow of Ophthalmology appointments, procedures, and surgical cases, ensuring timely patient care and client communication.
- 2Obtain patient histories and maintain accurate medical documentation in EzyVet, including client communications, charges, and discharge instructions.
- 3Work directly with the Ophthalmologist during exams, diagnostics, and treatments, safely restraining patients and obtaining vital parameters.
- 4Perform venipuncture, IV catheter placement, sample collection, and in-house laboratory testing, and administer oral, topical, SQ, IM, and IV medications.
- 5Calculate medication dosages, fluid rates, and CRIs, and assist the anesthetist with medication preparation and anesthesia-related support.
- 6Prepare patients, equipment, instruments, and the surgical suite for Ophthalmology procedures, and scrub in to assist the surgeon during operations.
- 7Maintain sterile technique, anticipate the surgeon's needs, and manage surgical instruments and supplies to ensure efficient flow.
- 8Assist with specialized diagnostics like ocular ultrasound and ERG, and recognize changes in patient condition to communicate concerns promptly.
- 9Clean, disinfect, restock, and reset surgical suites between cases, and manage inventory for ophthalmology rooms and equipment.
- 10Collaborate with hospital teams to coordinate patient care, and adapt to urgent or emergency cases while maintaining flexibility in schedule.
Requirements10
- 1High School diploma required; Associate's degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 21-2 years of veterinary experience in a clinical setting.
- 3Licensed Veterinary Technician preferred but not required.
- 4Ability to work Tuesday - Friday, 7:30am - 6:00pm, with flexibility to stay for urgent procedures.
- 5Fluent English skills (speaking and reading) required; bilingual a plus.
- 6Proficiency with EzyVet or similar veterinary practice management software.
- 7Strong skills in venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and in-house laboratory testing.
- 8Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology, medications, and diagnostic equipment, or willingness to learn.
- 9Ability to maintain sterile technique and assist in surgical procedures.
- 10Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills to handle high-caseload environments.
