Overview

You will assist veterinarians and technicians during exams, treatments, and surgeries at a full-service hospital serving the East Indianapolis community. Work alongside a team of 5+ veterinarians and skilled techs in a facility with six exam rooms, a surgical suite, and advanced diagnostics. This role combines hands-on animal care with client communication and clinic operations. You will own the patient experience from intake to follow-up, ensuring safety and compassion in every interaction.

What You'll Do12

  • 1Assist veterinarians and vet techs during examinations, treatments, and surgeries, including positioning and monitoring patients.
  • 2Handle and restrain animals safely and compassionately, using techniques that minimize stress for the animal.
  • 3Prepare exam rooms and surgical areas by cleaning and sterilizing equipment and surfaces to maintain a sterile environment.
  • 4Perform basic laboratory tests, including collecting blood, urine, and stool samples for analysis.
  • 5Administer medications and vaccinations under the supervision of a veterinarian, following protocols exactly.
  • 6Feed, bathe, and exercise animals as needed, ensuring their comfort and hygiene.
  • 7Maintain accurate medical records, documenting all procedures, medications, and observations in the practice management system.
  • 8Communicate with pet owners about their pets' care, treatment plans, and follow-up visits, providing clear and empathetic guidance.
  • 9Clean and maintain the clinic, including stocking supplies and ensuring a safe and sanitary environment.
  • 10Greet clients and their pets, complete the appointment sign-in process, confirm details, and escort clients to exam rooms.
  • 11Ensure accurate service and product sales accounting, handle payments, process credit/debit cards, and schedule future appointments.
  • 12Answer client calls for appointments, hospital inquiries, medication refills, and other requests, plus make outbound calls for reminders and follow-ups.

Requirements6

  • 1Previous experience working with animals in a veterinary setting, such as a clinic, shelter, or grooming facility.
  • 2Technical know-how in areas such as disinfection, administering medication, and using diagnostic equipment like IDEXX or Abaxis analyzers.
  • 3Physical ability to handle animals safely and compassionately, including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for long periods.
  • 4Strong communication skills to interact with pet owners and team members clearly and professionally.
  • 5Ability to work a flexible schedule, including rotating Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
  • 6High school diploma or equivalent; certification as a Veterinary Assistant (e.g., AVMA approved program) is a plus.
