Overview

You will support students with autism spectrum disorder, emotional impairments, and physical disabilities at Lessenger Elementary, starting the 2026/2027 school year. You will work alongside teachers and ancillary staff to implement instructional activities, manage behaviors, and assist with daily living tasks. This role demands physical stamina and a calm, positive attitude in challenging situations. What You'll Do10

  • 1Assist in preparation, implementation, and record-keeping of instructional activities under teacher direction.
  • 2Conduct assigned training activities with small groups in classrooms, libraries, cafeterias, and community settings.
  • 3Provide instructional assistance and accept feedback to align with educational best practices.
  • 4Monitor physical conditions of students with diabetes and seizure disorders, implementing medical procedures as assigned.
  • 5Implement behavior management plans, including crisis intervention and physical management of students.
  • 6Build positive relationships with students and staff, maintaining a calm supportive demeanor.
  • 7Conduct physical care procedures: feeding, showering, toileting, and wheelchair transfers.
  • 8Assist in data collection for behavioral analysis and instructional progress.
  • 9Participate in professional development, student staffings, and program committees.
  • 10Enter data and prepare reports using basic computer literacy.

Requirements10

  • 1High School graduate or equivalent, with advanced training in special education aide program preferred.
  • 2Experience working with students with emotional impairments, autism spectrum disorder, cognitive impairments, or physical disabilities.
  • 3Willingness to conduct physical management and care procedures, including activities of daily living.
  • 4Willingness to be trained in CPR and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques.
  • 5Good health, stamina, and a positive attitude toward students.
  • 6Ability to work with students displaying aggressive behaviors (threatening, hitting, kicking).
  • 7Pass a fitness for duty physical.
  • 8Basic computer literacy and ability to use instructional equipment (video, laminator, copier).
  • 9Reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.
  • 10Must pass criminal history check through Michigan State Police and FBI.
