Senior Cell Development Engineer, Electrochemistry & Prototype Line
Overview
Own the design and execution of experiments to advance solid-state cells and prototype manufacturing at Ion Storage Systems. You will connect material and process changes to cell outcomes, apply rigorous statistical analysis, and partner with automation, metrology, and technicians to drive prototype improvements. This hands-on role shapes processes as we scale toward volume production and new products, with a focus on creativity and collaboration in a fast-paced prototype environment.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build and lead experiments to optimize solid-state cells, anodes, and assembly processes, delivering clear improvements in prototype performance
- 2Investigate root causes of performance variation using rigorous analytics and statistics to inform design or process changes
- 3Define and execute validation plans for new materials, components, and process changes, ensuring robust readiness for scale
- 4Maintain documentation and process tracking, and communicate gaps in prototype line build tracking for continuous improvement
- 5Contribute to team growth by mentoring junior engineers on experimental design, analysis techniques, and lab practices
- 6Follow safety guidelines for handling and disposal of cells and chemicals, and complete hands-on training to master the prototype line
- 7Collaborate with automation and metrology engineers to optimize equipment and data collection on the prototype line
- 8Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills to coordinate across disciplines
- 9Engage in hiring efforts to support growing cell engineering team
- 10Adhere to quality and compliance standards while delivering reliable prototype data and insights
Requirements10
- 1B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field with 4+ years of relevant experience or Ph.D. with related experience
- 2Strong foundation in electrochemistry and battery test methods
- 3Demonstrated experience independently leading experiments from design through completion
- 4Excellent technical communication and organizational skills with a collaborative mindset
- 5Passion for creative problem solving in a fast-paced prototype environment
- 6Preferred: Python or similar tools for data analysis and visualization; familiarity with AI-assisted data analysis
- 7Experience with failure prediction and investigation methods such as Root Cause Analysis and FMEA
- 8Willingness to work onsite at ION's Beltsville, MD facility and comply with safety protocols
- 9Ability to stand and move around lab equipment for extended periods
- 10Commitment to inclusive, results-driven teamwork and continuous improvement
