Sanitation Operator, Residential Refuse Collection
Overview
Own the daily collection of residential refuse, trash, and recyclables for the City of Deer Park. Operate packer controls, clean trucks, and maintain the Transfer Station while working outdoors in all weather. Work with a tight-knit crew under the Sanitation Supervisor, with room to grow into a backup Driver role if you hold a Class B CDL. This position stands out for its variety: from bag distribution to confined-space work, no two days look the same.
What You'll Do8
- 1Collect household garbage, green waste, white goods, and waste oil from curbside bins using the packer control system.
- 2Operate and maintain the refuse truck's loading and compaction mechanisms to ensure efficient pickup runs.
- 3Clean and empty refuse trucks after each shift, including washing interiors and exteriors to prevent buildup.
- 4Maintain the Transfer Station building and grounds, including sweeping, litter removal, and basic repairs.
- 5Distribute city-wide garbage bags to residents, coordinating with the crew leaderman on routes.
- 6Work in confined spaces, such as compactors or storage areas, to clear jams and ensure safe operation.
- 7Assist the truck driver with backing, spotting, and hand signals to navigate tight residential streets.
- 8Load and unload refuse at the Transfer Station, guiding residents and ensuring proper disposal of hazardous items.
Requirements9
- 1High School Diploma or GED required.
- 26+ months of refuse laborer experience preferred, but not mandatory.
- 3Ability to understand hand signals and follow oral instructions from the crew leaderman.
- 4Willingness to wear protective clothing, including lifting belts, gloves, safety glasses, and safety vests.
- 5Physical stamina to lift and carry garbage bags weighing 50-100 lbs consistently throughout the shift.
- 6Comfort with constant bending, reaching, and twisting while maintaining a fast walking pace.
- 7Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather and near traffic hazards, with exposure to caustic substances and respiratory irritants.
- 8Willingness to work in confined spaces and handle potential hazards like sharp objects, dog bites, and loud machinery.
- 9A valid Class B CDL is a plus, as it enables backup Driver/Crew Leaderman duties.
