As a Salvage Material Handler, you own the physical flow of donated building materials, unloading, sorting, pricing, and stocking items that keep materials in circulation. You work hands-on in a warehouse, retail, and outdoor yard, supporting a mission-driven nonprofit that has kept over 60 million pounds of materials in use. What You'll Do9

  • 1Unload donated and salvaged materials from vehicles using hand trucks, carts, furniture dollies, and pallet jacks.
  • 2Sort, clean, price, stock, and organize reusable building materials such as doors, cabinets, sinks, lumber, and appliances.
  • 3Move and place materials throughout the store, warehouse, and outdoor yard, ensuring safe and accessible displays.
  • 4Assist with merchandising and maintain well-stocked, organized sales areas to support customer flow.
  • 5Provide respectful, helpful service to customers, donors, and volunteers, answering questions and helping load materials.
  • 6Follow safety procedures, using required PPE and proper lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and team-lift techniques.
  • 7Identify and report hazards, spills, blocked pathways, damaged materials, or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • 8Support daily store priorities, adapting to changing material flow, staffing needs, and customer activity.
  • 9Drive ReBuilding Center vehicles for material movement, pickups, or deliveries when assigned, with a valid driver's license.

Requirements10

  • 1Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and carry up to 75 pounds throughout the workday, including repetitive bending, lifting, carrying, stacking, pushing, pulling, standing, and walking.
  • 2Comfort working in an outdoor/open-air environment with dust, dirt, weather exposure, and seasonal temperature changes.
  • 3Willingness to wear steel-toed or safety shoes from the first day of employment.
  • 4Strong reliability, punctuality, and follow-through.
  • 5Clear, respectful communication skills with team members, customers, and community members.
  • 6Ability to work well with coworkers, volunteers, donors, customers, and community members.
  • 7Preferred: Experience in a warehouse, lumberyard, reuse/salvage, construction materials, retail operations, or other physically active work environment.
  • 8Preferred: Experience safely moving large, heavy, or bulky materials.
  • 9Preferred: Familiarity with building materials, tools, hardware, lumber, cabinets, doors, appliances, or architectural salvage.
  • 10Preferred: Bilingual skills, especially languages commonly used by ReBuilding Center customers and community members.
