Radio Frequency PCB Design Engineer
Overview
Lead physical realization of RF hardware at Orion Edge. Own schematic-to-manufacturable boards using Altium Designer. Partner with RF DesignSimulations Engineers and board houses to ensure performance survives real-world deployment. Deliver high-performance RF/microwave PCBs for DoD customers.
What You'll Do11
- 1Lead physical layout of RF microwave and mixed-signal printed circuit boards using Altium Designer from floor-planning through manufacturing release
- 2Manage complex multi-layer stack-ups and route controlled-impedance traces for microstrip stripline and grounded coplanar waveguide
- 3Implement RF layout best practices including via stitching via fencing shielding and isolation techniques to minimize crosstalk EMI and parasitic capacitance
- 4Translate schematic requirements and simulated geometries into accurate physical layouts preserving modeled performance from EM tools to fabricated boards
- 5Prepare complete manufacturing packages including Gerbers ODB++ drill files fabrication and assembly drawings and stack-up documentation
- 6Partition and route boards combining RF front ends with high-speed digital SDR FPGA interfaces and sensitive analog and power sections
- 7Support lab bring-up and characterization using measured results to close layout loops and improve subsequent spins
- 8Design and route controlled-impedance structures including microstrip stripline and grounded coplanar waveguide for clean launches transitions and connector interfaces
- 9Apply knowledge of RF laminates substrates dielectric constants loss tangents copper roughness and fabrication tolerances affecting RF performance
- 10Interpret RF schematics and apply fundamentals such as S-parameters wavelength scaling impedance matching and return path behavior
- 11Mitigate coupling leakage and spurious paths through grounding strategy shielding and compartmentalization
Requirements18
- 1Minimum 3 years hands-on RF/microwave or high-speed digital PCB layout experience in product development
- 2Demonstrated Altium Proficiency for RF/microwave or high-speed digital layout including constraint-driven routing rules management and library discipline
- 3Proven ability to design and route controlled-impedance structures and execute clean launches transitions
- 4Strong understanding of RF materials knowledge including laminates substrates dielectric constants loss tangents and copper roughness
- 5Familiarity with RF fundamentals such as S-parameters wavelength scaling impedance matching and return path behavior
- 6Experience with grounding strategy shielding compartmentalization and EMI mitigation
- 7Hands-on experience generating and releasing complete fabrication and assembly data packages
- 8U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain security clearance for export-controlled technical data
- 9Equivalent demonstrated experience with strong portfolio of released RF/microwave layouts preferred over degree
- 10ITAR and EAR compliance for handling export-controlled data
- 11Defense hardware experience including RF layout for electronic warfare SIGINT radar counter-UAS or tactical communications
- 12Exposure to exotic substrates such as Rogers Taconic Isola and PTFE-based laminates hybrid stack-ups and bonded multi-material constructions
- 13Frequency range experience spanning HF through Ka-band especially designs above 6 GHz
- 14Work with EM extraction and co-simulation tools like Ansys HFSS Keysight ADS Momentum/RFPro
- 15High-power RF printed wire assembly layout including thermal relief copper coin heavy copper and thermal/RF trade-offs
- 16Mechanical co-design collaboration for enclosure connector and thermal integration
- 17MIL-STD-810 environmental qualification and MIL-STD-461 EMI/EMC qualification experience
- 18IPC Certified Interconnect Designer certification preferred
