Overview

Quality Engineer will own quality controls for new product launches at a Tier 1 automotive supplier, ensuring APQP documentation and process controls meet IATF 16949:2016 standards. You will act as the primary customer quality contact for GM and Stellantis, managing corrective actions and 8D reports. This role sits on a cross-functional team with production, tooling, and engineering in Detroit. You will drive continuous improvement and reduce COPQ while supporting on-site launch activities. Unlike generic QA roles, this position demands deep OEM portal expertise and weekly customer interaction.

What You'll Do9

  • 1Build and update APQP core documentation, including Control Plans, FMEA, and Process Flow Charts for new program launches.
  • 2Manage GM and Stellantis supplier portals to track quality metrics, scorecards, and corrective action status.
  • 3Lead root cause analysis and drive 8D corrective action documentation to closure within customer timelines.
  • 4Inspect CMM data and statistical outputs to verify dimensional conformance and coordinate tooling improvements.
  • 5Reduce COPQ by analyzing scrap, sorting, and rework data, then implementing process changes with production teams.
  • 6Audit shop floor processes and products to identify gaps in SPC and process capability.
  • 7Drive PPAP submissions and launch readiness activities, coordinating with engineering and production.
  • 8Collaborate with customer quality representatives during on-site visits and daily communication.
  • 9Communicate engineering changes and their quality impact to internal teams and customers.

Requirements9

  • 15+ years as a Tier 1 Automotive Quality Engineer with APQP and PPAP expertise.
  • 27+ years in automotive manufacturing, with launch experience for GM and Stellantis programs.
  • 3Working knowledge of IATF 16949:2016 and internal auditing experience.
  • 4Proven use of GD&T, MSA, GR&R, and SPC for dimensional and process evaluation.
  • 5Hands-on experience with CMM inspection and statistical analysis.
  • 6Strong command of MS Office and statistical software for reporting.
  • 7Knowledge of metal stamping processes and tooling interactions.
  • 8Ability to travel domestically and internationally with a valid passport.
  • 9Clear written and verbal communication for customer-facing quality discussions.
