Overview
As a Patent Agent in the Boston office of an Am Law 100 firm, you will own patent prosecution for cutting-edge mechanical and electrical inventions. You will work directly with clients to build strategic portfolios, analyzing prior art and drafting claims that stand up to scrutiny. Collaboration sits at the core of the firm's culture, with attorneys and technical experts sharing insights daily. You will present technical findings to clients and colleagues, shaping the direction of their IP strategy. What You'll Do8
- 1Analyze scientific literature, patents, and applications involving mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science to extract key inventive concepts.
- 2Evaluate scientific data and technical concepts to assess patentability and infringement risks, using prior art searches and analyses.
- 3Draft patent applications, including detailed descriptions, backgrounds, and claims that precisely define inventions for U.S. and international filings.
- 4Respond to office actions from the USPTO and international offices, building persuasive technical and legal arguments to overcome rejections.
- 5Conduct freedom-to-operate and clearance studies to identify potential risks from competitors' patents and guide client strategies.
- 6Work directly with clients on innovative technologies, advising on IP portfolio development and positioning patents for maximum commercial impact.
- 7Present clear technical analyses and recommendations to attorneys, colleagues, and clients, translating complex concepts into actionable insights.
- 8Collaborate with attorneys, patent agents, and technical advisors to ensure seamless prosecution from invention disclosure to issuance.
Requirements8
- 1Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 22+ years of patent prosecution experience, with a strong grasp of USPTO procedures and PCT filings.
- 3Proven ability to read and interpret technical documents, including patents and scientific literature, with exceptional attention to detail.
- 4Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of dissecting complex inventions to identify key patentable elements.
- 5Strong written and verbal communication, able to present technical arguments to diverse audiences.
- 6Demonstrated track record of managing multiple cases simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines.
- 7Team-oriented mindset, thriving in a collaborative environment where knowledge sharing is routine.
- 8Ability to work from the Boston office 60% of the time, embracing the firm's hybrid work policy.
