Overview

As the Paralegal for the Family Assistance Administration, you will coordinate the entire research and response lifecycle for legislative inquiries, directly supporting the Deputy General Counsel of Legislation, Rules, and Policy. You will track requests, gather facts, and draft legal documents that shape final agency decisions for one of Indiana's largest agencies. Working in the Indiana Government Center, you will interact with attorneys, clients, and multiple divisions to ensure responses meet legal standards. This role stands out because it places you at the center of high-stakes legal coordination, impacting child welfare policies across the state.

What You'll Do8

  • 1Track and manage legislative service inquiries from intake through final response, using case management tools to monitor deadlines.
  • 2Research statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions to provide written analysis that supports attorney decisions.
  • 3Draft correspondence and legal documents, including routine pleadings, motions, affidavits, and interrogatories, and file them per judicial procedures.
  • 4Coordinate with divisions to obtain information and verify the accuracy of final agency decisions before approval by attorneys.
  • 5Schedule interviews, meetings, and depositions for attorneys, clients, and witnesses, and prepare interview summaries.
  • 6Assist with trial preparation by attending hearings, handling exhibits, taking notes, and reviewing transcripts.
  • 7Prepare, organize, and retrieve case files, including evidence, exhibits, and pleadings, ensuring secure storage and retrieval.
  • 8Send official responses to approved U visa requests, ensuring they meet legal formatting and confidentiality requirements.

Requirements10

  • 12+ years of paralegal experience plus a paralegal certification from an accredited program (a degree is not required).
  • 22+ years applying legal procedures and terminology in a similar role.
  • 3Strong written and oral communication skills to draft legal documents and interact with attorneys and clients.
  • 4Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and case management and legal database tools.
  • 5Ability to handle sensitive documents and maintain confidentiality of agency information.
  • 6Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail in managing multiple deadlines.
  • 7Strong investigative and research skills to analyze legal sources and statutes.
  • 8Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks to meet strict deadlines.
  • 9Effective customer service skills for internal and external parties.
  • 10Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
