Overview
The Ophthalmic Technician III owns diagnostic and administrative support for the multi-specialty Byers Eye Institute practice. You will obtain patient histories, perform autorefractometry, tonometry, visual fields, and optical coherence tomography, and assist during minor surgical procedures like intravitreal injections. Working with minimal supervision, you'll coordinate patient flow, serve as the liaison between providers and patients, and help train new staff. What You'll Do8
- 1Document and update patient ocular and medical histories in electronic and paper records, ensuring accuracy for provider review
- 2Perform diagnostic tests including autorefractometry, lensometry, tonometry, topography, biometry, and optical coherence tomography
- 3Administer eye drops for pupil dilation and topical anesthesia under provider supervision, and assist with minor procedures like laser treatments and intravitreal injections
- 4Process medication refills and patient follow-up calls, verifying insurance and preparing clinic files
- 5Operate and maintain equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and stocking exam rooms with supplies
- 6Triage patient issues and coordinate with doctors and staff to resolve inquiries efficiently during clinic sessions
- 7Support training of technical staff, residents, and fellows rotating through the service
- 8Monitor and track work requests, ensuring timely completion and escalating abnormalities to physicians
Requirements10
- 1Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) upon hire and maintained
- 22-3 years of experience as an ophthalmic technician in a high-volume setting
- 3Skill in acquiring medical history, measuring visual acuity, and performing tonometry
- 4Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
- 5Ability to write clearly and proofread correspondence
- 6Knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology of the visual system
- 7Experience with patient-related testing equipment and ability to learn new diagnostic tools
- 8Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- 9Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- 10Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with patients, staff, and physicians
