Overview

You will own custom automated equipment and robotic systems from concept through installation at a leading industrial automation company in Morrisville, NC. Your designs move from CAD to the shop floor to customer sites, and you will see them built, tested, and running in production. You'll collaborate daily with mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers, and build deep experience with robotic cells, safety, and modern manufacturing. This role offers hands-on engineering, complex problem solving, and full ownership of your work from start to finish.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Define requirements and develop system concepts with customers and internal teams
  • 2Review customer parts, 3D models, and drawings to assess complexity, tolerances, and variability
  • 3Assist with project management: timelines, budgets, and coordination with internal teams, suppliers, and customers
  • 4Design complex automated machinery with pneumatic and electromechanical components using SolidWorks
  • 5Integrate robots, end of arm tooling (EOAT), feeding systems, and material handling cells
  • 6Lead internal and customer design reviews and refine designs based on feedback
  • 7Perform risk assessments and contribute to machine and robotic cell safety
  • 8Produce high-level concepts and detailed part and assembly drawings for manufacturing
  • 9Partner with electrical and controls engineering to ensure smooth system integration during testing and debugging
  • 10Oversee the build on the shop floor, guide assemblers, and support installation and troubleshooting at customer sites

Requirements10

  • 1Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics emphasis is a plus)
  • 23+ years of experience in industrial automation design
  • 3Proficiency in SolidWorks and related CAD/CAM tools
  • 4Experience sizing actuators, servos, sensors, and pneumatics
  • 5Practical knowledge of machining and other fabrication processes
  • 6Experience applying GD&T to part designs and drawings
  • 7Strong communication skills and experience working with vendors and suppliers
  • 8Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and debugging
  • 9Experience with equipment installation and prove out at customer sites
  • 10Experience designing robotic automation cells, including reach and cycle analysis, safety, and risk assessment
