Mechanical Design Engineer, SolidWorks & DFM
Overview
You will own the redesign of an existing outdoor power equipment product, delivering a technical data package within 4-6 weeks. Working under a Project Engineer, you will apply DFM and DFA principles to cut costs, reduce part count, and improve assembly. You will collaborate with vendors and suppliers to drive design reviews and analyze competitive products. This contract role gives you access to a physical unit, CAD files, and BOMs, with an NDA required.
What You'll Do9
- 1Redesign existing product aspects to add value, improve assembly productivity, and reduce material costs.
- 2Investigate cost drivers and develop novel designs to reduce complexity and part count.
- 3Create fabrication drawings for parts and assemblies with sheet-metal and weldments in SolidWorks and PDM Vault.
- 4Collaborate with vendors on design reviews to assess costs and add part value.
- 5Research competitive products to incorporate alternative design improvements.
- 6Support new product development and existing product lines.
- 7Update assembly documentation and BOMs in SolidWorks and Microsoft Excel.
- 8Prepare project status reports summarizing actions and findings.
- 9Ensure compliance with engineering and quality policies.
Requirements7
- 15-10 years in product design with a two-year technical degree, or 3-5 years with a mechanical or industrial engineering degree.
- 2Proficiency with SolidWorks CAD, including sheet-metal and weldments, and PDM Vault.
- 3Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
- 4Exposure to outdoor power equipment with small gasoline engines.
- 5Hands-on fabrication, machine assembly, and power tool skills are a plus.
- 6Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- 7Proficient in root cause analysis.
