Law Clerk, Civil Defense Litigation Los Angeles
Overview
Support a Los Angeles civil defense litigation firm on active matters from investigation through trial. Work directly with associates and partners on live files, producing work product used in real cases. This role spans research, drafting, discovery, and trial preparation, with direct courtroom and strategy exposure. You will gain full-lifecycle litigation experience across manufacturing, transportation, retail, hospitality, and public entities.
What You'll Do7
- 1Conduct legal research on liability, damages, procedural, and evidentiary questions using Westlaw or Lexis and draft internal memoranda summarizing findings.
- 2Draft initial pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and correspondence for attorney review, with careful cite-checking and authority verification.
- 3Summarize deposition transcripts, identify key testimony for case themes, and chronologize medical records and employment files.
- 4Organize and analyze discovery materials, including document productions and written responses, and assemble exhibits for motions and trial.
- 5Attend and observe depositions, law and motion hearings, mediations, and trial preparation sessions, and participate in case strategy discussions.
- 6Support trial preparation by assisting with witness preparation and exhibit management, working directly with associates and partners.
- 7Manage multiple assignments simultaneously and deliver under deadline pressure, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
Requirements7
- 1Currently enrolled in, or a graduate of, an accredited law school.
- 2Strong legal research skills with proficiency in Westlaw, Lexis, or comparable platforms.
- 3Clear, precise legal writing with attention to detail and citation accuracy.
- 4Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced legal environment.
- 5Professional judgment and discretion in handling confidential client information.
- 6Reliable in-person attendance at the Los Angeles office.
- 7Preferred: prior litigation, law firm, or judicial externship experience; familiarity with California Code of Civil Procedure; exposure to insurance defense, personal injury, premises liability, or products liability; experience with document review platforms and case management software.
