Overview
You will own specimen processing and customer service for the Pathology Lab at Boston Medical Center, handling surgical and biological specimens with accuracy and speed. You will bridge the gap between clinical staff and pathologists, ensuring correctly prepared samples and data for diagnoses. You will work on site in Boston, part time, under the supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Supervisor. This role stands out for its direct impact on patient care and the opportunity to train less experienced technicians.
What You'll Do8
- 1Process incoming surgical and biological specimens, verifying identification per lab policies.
- 2Centrifuge and aliquot specimens, following special handling instructions for each protocol.
- 3Label and distribute specimens to appropriate lab sections within specific time frames.
- 4Prepare and store specimens for send out to reference laboratories, including random and 24 hour urine samples.
- 5Monitor and record daily temperatures and perform scheduled maintenance on lab equipment.
- 6Answer telephones and deliver reports in a timely fashion, conveying accurate information to patients and staff.
- 7Complete all appropriate logs for documentation and troubleshooting, communicating issues to the supervisor.
- 8Train and guide less experienced laboratory support technicians in specimen processing and customer service.
Requirements8
- 1High School Diploma required.
- 21+ years of laboratory and specimen processing experience preferred.
- 3Ability to understand and follow study protocols for specimen processing.
- 4Skill in centrifuging, aliquoting, and labeling specimens accurately.
- 5Strong customer service and communication skills with patients, staff, and phone customers.
- 6Commitment to confidentiality and following BMC's rules.
- 7Ability to stand for extended periods and handle biological specimens safely.
- 8Flexibility to work part time schedule in an onsite role.
