Laboratory Support Technician, Clinical Lab
Overview
You will support UPMC's automated laboratory, microbiology, and reference lab operations, handling specimen processing, instrument maintenance, and quality control. You'll work with Beckman DXH900 analyzers and slide maker stainer technologies. This role connects you to the clinical lab career ladder with pathways to MLT or MLS roles. You'll gain hands-on experience in a recently remodeled lab, contributing directly to patient care.
What You'll Do10
- 1Answer phone inquiries and investigate specimen status, directing callers to additional resources.
- 2Receive, sort, prepare, and deliver testing-ready specimens to work areas.
- 3Perform routine and basic instrument maintenance, including temperature recording.
- 4Restock supplies and maintain clean storage for room temperature, refrigerated, and frozen items.
- 5Prepare and replenish instrument reagents and consumables as needed.
- 6Execute QA/QC procedures and document results.
- 7Assist with specimen and slide storage and retrieval.
- 8Check pending work lists and resolve unprocessed work.
- 9Decontaminate work areas and maintain a clean environment.
- 10Prepare specimens for testing, including building worklists and loading/unloading instruments; prepare slides and plant specimens in growth media.
Requirements4
- 1High School diploma or equivalent with 2+ years as a Specimen Processor in a clinical lab, OR an Associate degree with biology and chemistry plus 1+ years experience, OR Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification with 1+ year experience, OR 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training, OR a B.S. in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR enrollment in an MLS program with 3+ years college credits.
- 2Medical Laboratory Assistant (ASCP) certification preferred.
- 3Valid driver's license if required by department.
- 4Act 34 clearance required.
