What You'll Do23

  • 1Perform designated histologic procedures using manual and automated techniques
  • 2Produce high-quality pathology slides for Pathologist review
  • 3Embed and section tissue blocks according to established protocols
  • 4Process biopsy routine and other tissue specimens
  • 5Perform and evaluate routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining
  • 6Identify staining inconsistencies and correct issues before slides are released
  • 7Perform special stains and review results for quality and consistency
  • 8Verify and document appropriate positive controls for special stains
  • 9Review positive and negative immunohistochemistry controls and document results
  • 10Escalate specimen testing or equipment issues to laboratory leadership and Pathologist
  • 11Follow established pre-analytic analytic and post-analytic laboratory procedures
  • 12Maintain accurate records of laboratory testing and results
  • 13Perform and document quality control testing calibrations instrument verification equipment maintenance
  • 14Recognize testing systems that fall outside established performance specifications
  • 15Document corrective actions when testing or equipment issues occur
  • 16Evaluate test results for abnormalities and confirm results according to departmental protocols
  • 17Maintain required STAT turnaround times
  • 18Participate in proficiency testing validations training and competency assessments
  • 19Support laboratory inspection and regulatory-readiness activities
  • 20Participate in quality-improvement programs and report nonconformances
  • 21Maintain inventory records including lot numbers expiration dates labeling and quality-control requirements
  • 22Complete required annual training in-services and continuing education
  • 23Maintain compliance with laboratory safety and chemical-handling procedures

Requirements11

  • 1Current New York State Clinical Laboratory Technician license
  • 2Current New York State Histotechnician license or qualifying Pathologists' Assistant license
  • 3Education meeting applicable New York State Office of the Professions and CLIA requirements
  • 4Knowledge of histologic laboratory procedures
  • 5Ability to perform tissue embedding and sectioning
  • 6Ability to perform and evaluate H&E and special stains
  • 7Strong attention to detail and commitment to laboratory quality
  • 8Ability to follow quality-control and quality-assurance procedures
  • 9Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • 10Ability to work independently while escalating significant findings appropriately
  • 11Flexibility and adaptability in a changing laboratory environment
