Head Coach Cross Country Track Field at Caltech
Overview
You will lead the Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field programs at Caltech, a top-tier STEM institute with 975 undergraduates in NCAA Division 3. You own the full program: coaching, recruiting, scheduling, budgeting, and compliance with NCAA D3 and SCIAC rules. Your team competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and you will teach physical education classes and mentor student-athletes balancing rigorous academics. This role drives the athletic program's transformation and builds community across campus.
What You'll Do10
- 1Design and execute a competitive schedule for intercollegiate contests that maximizes student-athlete development and prioritizes conference play within an academically rigorous environment.
- 2Recruit, matriculate, retain, and graduate student-athletes capable of earning a baccalaureate degree, maintaining a roster for competitive success in the SCIAC.
- 3Teach and coach sport-specific skills, motivation, tactical strategies, and physical training in practices and contests.
- 4Supervise part-time assistant coaches and volunteer coaches, ensuring alignment with program goals.
- 5Manage the program's budget, including purchasing, inventory, equipment control, team travel, and a national recruiting program.
- 6Participate in marketing, public relations, civic outreach, and fundraising, including donor and alumni cultivation.
- 7Develop collaborative relationships with department colleagues, faculty, and administration, working with SID, equipment, and ATC.
- 8Teach beginner physical education classes up to one per term in the undergraduate curriculum.
- 9Ensure compliance with NCAA and SCIAC regulations, maintaining the highest ethical standards and sportsmanship.
- 10Assume additional duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics, including game supervision and facility maintenance.
Requirements10
- 1Bachelor's degree required.
- 2Valid Driver's License maintained throughout employment.
- 3Organized coaching experience in cross country and track and field.
- 4Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, judgment, and integrity.
- 5Strong computing skills including database manipulation, email, calendar, video analysis, and emerging technologies.
- 6Ability to teach through physical instruction and images.
- 7Passion and ability for personal growth and learning.
- 8Ability to safely lift, carry, and move 50+ lbs of equipment.
- 9Playing experience and passion for cross country/track and field.
- 10Preferred: Master's degree, collegiate playing experience, and assistant/head coaching experience.
