Generator Technician, Emergency Power Systems
Overview
You will own the reliable operation, maintenance, and repair of mixed-fuel emergency generators, ATS switchgear, and controls across George Washington University campuses. Your work ensures life-safety readiness and continuity of operations, with a Monday-Friday 7am-4pm schedule plus rotating on-call. You will coordinate with internal trades and external vendors, and your expertise with NFPA 110 and NFPA 70E standards will drive campus emergency power performance. This role offers direct impact on critical infrastructure and a clear path for technical growth in a university setting.
What You'll Do8
- 1Operate, maintain, exercise, and test emergency generators and ATS equipment to ensure readiness.
- 2Perform preventive maintenance on diesel and natural gas generators, documenting results in CMMS.
- 3Troubleshoot generator system faults, diagnose root causes, and repair controls, fuel systems, and switchgear.
- 4Conduct load bank testing and operational checks on battery chargers, heaters, and alarms.
- 5Coordinate with vendors for service, scheduling outages, and verifying contractor work.
- 6Inspect electrical systems and facilities to identify maintenance priorities and recommend repairs.
- 7Maintain accurate records of work orders, test logs, and inspection reports.
- 8Follow LOTO and NFPA 70E safety practices during all service and maintenance tasks.
Requirements7
- 11.5+ years of relevant experience with generator maintenance, or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- 2Certification in EGSA or equivalent generator systems training (preferred).
- 3Certification in NFPA 70E arc-flash safety and LOTO procedures.
- 4Experience troubleshooting diesel engines, fuel systems, and high-voltage equipment.
- 5Proficiency in reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and service manuals.
- 6Strong documentation skills for maintenance reports and logs.
- 7Valid driver's license and ability to travel campus-wide, including after-hours callouts.
