Fire System Technician, Data Center Fire Alarm & Suppression
Overview
Install, inspect, test, and repair fire alarm and suppression systems in enterprise data centers. Own the Fire Life Safety program for a 24/7/365 facility, coordinating with FacOps teams to maintain uptime. Work with VESDA aspirating smoke detection and NITROGEN clean agent systems. Ensure full compliance with NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and NFPA 13. The role demands expert-level troubleshooting and vendor coordination in mission-critical environments.
What You'll Do8
- 1Install fire alarm control panels, sensors, smoke/heat detectors, VESDA units, and notification appliances; wire and program per manufacturer specs and design drawings.
- 2Maintain suppression systems including pre-action sprinkler, clean agent, and dry/wet systems; perform commissioning and acceptance tests for new installations.
- 3Conduct semiannual, annual, and 3-year inspections on VESDA and fire alarm systems; perform detector cleaning, battery checks, and sensitivity testing per NFPA 72 and site requirements.
- 4Diagnose and resolve faults in wiring, devices, communication paths, and control panels; respond to alarms and troubles, identifying root causes and performing emergency repairs within required timeframes.
- 5Document all inspections, tests, and repairs in the enterprise asset management system (Hexagon/EAM); support impairment tracking and fire watch activities.
- 6Coordinate with Critical Operations Managers (COMs) and Lead Building Engineers (LBEs) to schedule work and manage system impairments via the Centralized Maintenance Coordination Center (CMCC).
- 7Oversee third-party contractors performing FLS work and ensure all activity meets AHJ requirements.
- 8Read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical manuals to guide installation and troubleshooting.
Requirements10
- 1High school diploma or GED
- 2NICET Level I in Fire Alarm Systems or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- 32+ years installing, inspecting, testing, or maintaining fire alarm and/or fire suppression systems
- 4Working knowledge of NFPA 72 and familiarity with NFPA 25 and NFPA 13
- 5Experience with VESDA/aspirating smoke detection systems
- 6Experience with Simplex, Notifier, or Edwards fire alarm platforms
- 7Ability to pass a background check for data center access
- 8Valid driver's license
- 9Comfortable working at heights on ladders and lifts, and in confined spaces
- 10Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and wear PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, and hearing protection
