Fire Dispatcher I - Emergency Call Center
Overview
As a Fire Dispatcher I for Metro Cities Fire Authority, you will handle 911 calls and dispatch fire and medical units across seven Orange County agencies. You will operate a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, coordinate radio communications, and manage high-stress emergencies. This role demands precision, calm judgment, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. You will work shifts including nights and weekends, with a 5% differential for night work.
What You'll Do6
- 1Receive emergency and non-emergency calls, determine the nature and location, and prioritize dispatch of fire units using the CAD system.
- 2Operate an 800 MHz radio system to maintain contact with units and track their status and location throughout assignments.
- 3Answer non-emergency requests and dispatch appropriate resources as needed.
- 4Test and inspect dispatch equipment, including radios, telephones, and CAD terminals, to ensure operational readiness.
- 5Maintain detailed records of calls, dispatches, and unit locations, and complete clerical tasks to support the communication center.
- 6Provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) instructions to callers while waiting for responders, using AED and CPR protocols.
Requirements10
- 1California P.O.S.T.-certified Public Safety Dispatchers’ Basic Course Certificate.
- 2Current Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification from the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch (required by end of probation).
- 3Current Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED Certificate.
- 4Ability to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- 5Flexibility to respond to unexpected shifts within 60 minutes.
- 6Entry-level experience operating a computer terminal and office equipment.
- 7Typing speed of 35 words per minute net-corrected.
- 8Knowledge of dispatch codes and ability to learn department procedures.
- 9Strong verbal communication skills to elicit information from distressed callers.
- 10Ability to pass a background investigation and medical exam.
