Overview

Own the electrical commissioning scope for a natural gas facility upgrade in Santa Clarita, CA, overseeing 5kV–115kV systems including switchgear, transformers, and PLCs. You will lead pre-commissioning and energization sequences while serving as the critical bridge between the contractor and the owner's Gas Engineering team. With construction running concurrent to engineering, your ability to translate field conditions into clear engineering-facing communication drives project success. What You'll Do10

  • 1Develop the electrical commissioning plan, defining turnover sequence, pre-commissioning checksheets, and acceptance criteria for 5kV–115kV systems.
  • 2Manage the commissioning database, tracking completion status, punch list items, and sign-off documentation through closeout.
  • 3Oversee pre-commissioning and commissioning of switchgear, power transformers, distribution centers, and motor control centers, ensuring proper terminations.
  • 4Direct load migration activities, verifying circuit transfers per approved procedures before accepting new distribution infrastructure.
  • 5Lead pre-energization checks, protective relay testing, and energization sequences with vendor and OEM support.
  • 6Coordinate PLC panel and control system commissioning with instrumentation personnel, validating functional acceptance.
  • 7Serve as the primary interface between the electrical contractor and the owner's engineering team, resolving RFIs and technical issues promptly.
  • 8Translate field changes and commissioning status into structured reports that support design decisions and schedule management.
  • 9Facilitate coordination meetings, documenting decisions and action items for contractor, engineering, and operations teams.
  • 10Enforce commissioning safety protocols, including NFPA 70E compliance and participation in hazard analyses for energized work.

Requirements9

  • 15+ years in electrical commissioning, construction management, or field engineering on utility or industrial projects.
  • 2Hands-on experience with medium- and high-voltage systems (5kV–115kV), including switchgear and transformers.
  • 3Proven record as a coordination interface between contractor and owner's engineering team.
  • 4Ability to read one-line diagrams, P&IDs, equipment submittals, and project specifications.
  • 5Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, and California electrical codes.
  • 6Exceptional written and verbal communication for producing field and commissioning reports.
  • 7OSHA 10 certification (construction industry) required.
  • 8Preferred: OSHA 30, NETA certification, or equivalent third-party testing background.
  • 9Preferred: Experience with PLC commissioning and utility service connection coordination.
