Customs Specialist Job in Houston, TX | Academy Sports
Overview
You will own import compliance for Academy Sports + Outdoors, classifying products with the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and ensuring duty rates match regulations. You will work with C-TPAT, ISA, and IPR programs daily, interfacing with brokers and internal teams to clear goods. What You'll Do9
- 1Classify import items using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and General Rules of Interpretation, assigning correct duty rates.
- 2Maintain the classification database and enforce internal control procedures with brokers and customs.
- 3Resolve daily compliance issues that delay import clearance, anticipating problems and diffusing situations.
- 4Ensure import products are properly described and classified, approving broker entries after analysis.
- 5Support C-TPAT, ISA, and IPR programs, carrying out import compliance tasks.
- 6Assist in establishing and monitoring compliance procedures, documenting changes as needed.
- 7Collaborate with Global Sourcing, Merchants, Vendors, and DC operations to resolve import shipment issues.
- 8Interface with customs brokers, vendors, import logistics, and global sourcing teams to ensure smooth clearance.
- 9Complete strategic objectives assigned by the manager, adjusting to evolving priorities.
Requirements9
- 1Bachelor's degree in Business or related field required.
- 23+ years classifying import items or equivalent work experience.
- 3Knowledge of U.S. import regulations and ability to classify using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule.
- 4Understanding of customs broker practices and Customs software tools.
- 5Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- 6Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with ability to multi-task.
- 7Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- 8Certified Custom Specialist preferred.
- 9Sporting goods (apparel/footwear/hardgoods) or retail industry experience preferred.
