Controller, Nonprofit Organization - GAAP, Grants & Compliance
Overview
Own the financial operations for a respected nonprofit in Los Angeles with oversight of accounting, reporting, budgeting, compliance, and internal controls. Lead day-to-day accounting activities and ensure integrity of financial records and grant compliance. Partner with program leaders and the board to inform strategy through financial analysis. This role combines hands-on accounting management with strategic oversight to support the organization’s mission.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build and oversee general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, and cash management to produce timely financial statements and maintain accurate records
- 2Ensure GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards are followed and monitor bank and investment activity for accuracy
- 3Lead budgeting and financial planning with variance analysis and forecasting to inform leadership decisions
- 4Manage grants and compliance by tracking restricted funding and preparing funder reports and grant accounting schedules
- 5Coordinate annual audits and Form 990 support while enhancing internal controls and financial policies
- 6Guide leadership and program managers with financial insights and strategic budgeting for programs and grants
- 7Support board and finance committee reporting requirements and provide financial resources across departments
- 8Mentor accounting staff and contribute to strategic planning and organizational initiatives
- 9Strengthen compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and improve process efficiency
- 10Prepare and review financial reports for funders, agencies, and board committees as needed
Requirements5
- 17+ years of accounting or finance experience
- 2Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- 3CPA license (active or inactive)
- 4Experience with nonprofit accounting standards and grant reporting
- 5Strong budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls experience
Salary Insight
$210 - $225k per year
