TreePeople Controller
Overview
TreePeople seeks a Controller who will lead all day-to-day finance operations in a nonprofit setting. This role involves overseeing accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grants accounting while managing risk and participating in monthly and yearly accounting closes. The ideal candidate will drive financial strategy and support the organization’s mission.
What You'll Do21
- 1Accounting Guides financial decisions by establishing monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures
- 2Protects assets by establishing monitoring and enforcing internal controls
- 3Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits
- 4Leads the accounting department on month-end close
- 5Prepares monthly closing entries including journal entries and bank reconciliations
- 6Review general ledger for proper recognition of revenue expenses liability and net assets
- 7Maintains monthly balance sheet reconciliations and reviews reconciliations prepared by staff accountants
- 8Manages all audit activity ensures compliance with local state and federal financial reporting requirements
- 9Ensures filing dates for vendor sales tax and 1099 disclosures meet government entity requirements
- 10Maintains banking relationships and documentation
- 11Reviews accounting processes semi-annually to ensure best practices remain sound
- 12Oversees grant management and payroll reporting aligning expenditures with grant budgets
- 13Assists with financial reporting materials for government and private grants
- 14Meets regularly with programs to ensure accurate timely grant reporting
- 15Oversees recruitment and development of accounting staff through scheduling assignments and performance coaching
- 16Complies with legal requirements by studying legislation and advising management on necessary actions
- 17Establishes preventive maintenance for equipment and maintains inventories
- 18Evaluates new equipment and techniques to improve efficiency
- 19Attends workshops and participates in professional societies to maintain knowledge
- 20Protects operations by keeping financial information confidential
- 21Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
Requirements12
- 1Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related discipline required
- 2Master’s in Accounting or CPA preferred business administration
- 3Minimum 5 years’ experience in nonprofit accounting
- 4Audit Guide certification required
- 5Demonstrated grant management and reporting experience with state grants preferred
- 6Proven ability to supervise accounting staff and lead month end close
- 7Experience with external auditors for financial filings
- 8Strong interpersonal and communication skills with analytical and organizational abilities
- 9Self-motivated independent worker capable of prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines
- 10Advanced knowledge of Sage accounting software and Excel Word PowerPoint
- 11Ability to analyze data identify patterns and merge sources for reporting
- 12Supervisory skills for recruiting training assigning work and conducting performance evaluations

$130 - $140k per year
