Controller, Manufacturing & Financial Reporting
Overview
The Controller owns the financial operations of Journal Graphics, a print production company in Portland, Oregon. This role directs monthly closes, annual budgets, and quarterly forecasts while guiding the leadership team on profitability and growth. You will manage a team and collaborate with the Board, banks, and auditors to ensure compliance and strategic alignment. Your financial expertise will shape decisions that directly impact the company's performance and future.
What You'll Do10
- 1Own the monthly close, producing income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for the Board, senior management, and the bank.
- 2Build the annual budget and periodic forecasts, arming leadership with data to steer the business profitably.
- 3Develop profitability reports that spotlight operational strengths and weaknesses, briefing the President and the Board on results.
- 4Lead business reviews and strategic planning sessions, offering financial insight to guide major decisions.
- 5Coordinate with the external accounting firm to complete the annual financial review and secure reviewed statements.
- 6Supervise biannual physical inventory counts of paper, ink, and plates, ensuring accurate valuation.
- 7Drive the investment committee, oversee the annual 401(k) plan audit, and file Form 5500 on time.
- 8Prepare and file monthly and quarterly sales and use tax returns, plus Oregon CAT tax filings.
- 9Direct customer payment collections and AR management, making credit decisions that protect cash flow.
- 10Supervise billing, job costing, G/L reconciliations, and the AP process, keeping financial records precise.
Requirements8
- 110+ years in financial roles with increasing responsibility, including 5+ years as a Controller or higher.
- 2CPA certification strongly preferred.
- 3Experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- 42+ years in a public accounting firm preferred.
- 5Undergraduate degree in business, accounting, or finance.
- 6Intermediate Excel and Word skills, with pivot table knowledge a plus.
- 7Deep understanding of GAAP principles and sales/use tax laws.
- 8Leadership experience managing an ERP system and guiding financial teams.
