Coatings and Materials Manufacturing Engineer, Robotics
Overview
You own the industrialization of advanced coatings, load-bearing fiber systems, and advanced materials for NEO, our humanoid robot shipping to homes. You lead scale-up from lab to high-volume production, specifying equipment, designing production lines, and developing SOPs and work instructions. Working with Mechanical Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Manufacturing, and suppliers, you drive new material technologies from concept to stable production. This role is hands-on and floor-facing, requiring solid industrial production experience and a data-driven approach using DOE, SPC, and PFMEA. You bring deep expertise in chemical engineering or polymer science to solve multidisciplinary challenges where materials and robotics intersect.
What You'll Do9
- 1Own scale-up of coatings and load-bearing fiber systems from lab to production using capacity models, cycle time, and cost to guide equipment and automation choices
- 2Develop repeatable manufacturing processes for advanced materials with defined process windows and production-readiness criteria using DOE, SPC, and PFMEA
- 3Specify and commission production equipment, tooling, fixtures, and material-handling systems that improve safety and maintainability
- 4Define critical-to-quality characteristics, inspection methods, and control plans to meet product requirements consistently
- 5Drive first-pass yield and quality improvement through structured root-cause analysis and corrective action
- 6Establish technical documentation including process specs, SOPs, work instructions, and validation reports
- 7Train production operators on new processes and safety procedures
- 8Collaborate with quality and supplier teams to transition materials from R&D to high-volume manufacturing
- 9Optimize processes to reduce cost and increase throughput while balancing safety and quality
Requirements9
- 1Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Engineering, or related field
- 23+ years of industry experience in materials, chemical, or coating manufacturing
- 3Hands-on experience scaling processes for coatings, elastomers, polymers, synthetic fibers, or composite materials
- 4Demonstrated track record transitioning materials from R&D to high-volume production
- 5Working knowledge of DOE, SPC, process capability, PFMEA, and structured root-cause analysis
- 6Experience defining equipment requirements, designing tooling, and managing vendors
- 7Strong analytical skills using manufacturing data to improve yield and throughput
- 8Excellent communication and cross-functional project leadership abilities
- 9Knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical regulations, and material compliance standards
