Civil Engineering Expert | $70-$80/hr Remote
Overview
Mercor is looking for senior civil engineers to help train AI systems that operate in large-scale infrastructure and construction projects. You'll design realistic engineering scenarios, create reference solutions, and build scoring rubrics that capture expert-level judgment. The work is split into two standards tracks—US (ASCE, ACI, AISC, AASHTO) and International (Eurocodes, ISO)—so you can focus on your area of expertise. This is a remote, hourly contract role paying $70–$80/hr, ideal for engineers who want to shape how AI handles high-stakes public works.
What You'll Do5
- 1Develop engineering scenarios that cover the full lifecycle of large infrastructure projects, from design through permitting, regulatory review, and construction management.
- 2Create tasks across multiple disciplines, including structural analysis, transportation and highway engineering, water resources and environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and construction project management.
- 3Build hands-on exercises using industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, STAAD.Pro/ETABS, and HEC-RAS, plus enterprise project management platforms commonly used on major programs.
- 4Apply relevant engineering methodologies—like structural load analysis, geotechnical site assessment, and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling—to produce reference design plans, calculations, and technical narratives for stakeholders and regulators.
- 5Write clear rubrics that separate genuine engineering judgment from generic textbook answers, ensuring AI systems learn to reason like seasoned professionals.
Requirements3
- 1A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience as a civil engineer or engineering lead, with direct ownership of large infrastructure design, permitting, or construction delivery.
- 2Strong command of civil engineering software and methodologies, plus a working understanding of regulatory approvals, environmental review (e.g., NEPA or international equivalents), and public agency oversight.
- 3A recognized professional engineering credential is strongly preferred—US PE, or international equivalent like CEng, EUR ING, or P.Eng—and prior experience writing rubrics, training materials, or design documentation is a plus.
Who Should Apply
This role is ideal for senior civil engineers who enjoy teaching and evaluating complex work. You're someone who has owned large-scale projects from concept to delivery, understands both the technical and regulatory sides of infrastructure, and can articulate the nuances of expert decision-making. Whether your background is US-based or international, you'll find a flexible remote setup and the chance to directly influence how AI handles civil engineering challenges.
Salary Insight
$70.00–$80.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Application Tip
Before applying, prepare two sample scenarios—one US-track and one International-track—that show how you'd frame a real engineering problem and evaluate an AI's response. This will demonstrate your ability to build assessment tasks, not just perform engineering work.
