Cancer Data & Education Specialist, Oncology Data & Quality Assurance
Overview
You will own cancer registry data accuracy and education at the Tampa General Cancer Institute, auditing abstracts from a multi-team registry and delivering monthly training. Your work drives Commission on Cancer compliance and registry certification across the program. Reporting to the Cancer Registry Coordinator, you will serve as the subject-matter expert for AJCC, SEER, and STORE standards, guiding new abstractors and contracted staff. This role pairs deep data quality work with educator responsibilities, making it ideal for an ODS-C certified specialist who wants to shape registry performance.
What You'll Do8
- 1Audit cancer registry abstracts against CoC, FCDS, and NAACCR standards, correcting accuracy gaps in primary site, staging, and treatment data within 90 days.
- 2Deliver monthly group education sessions on AJCC staging, SEER Summary Stage, and coding updates, using quality review findings to target training.
- 3Mentor new abstractors one-on-one, providing case-level guidance to reduce submission errors and accelerate proficiency.
- 4Maintain registry manuals and reference materials, updating STORE guidelines and ICD-O codes as standards evolve.
- 5Submit data to FCDS, NCDB, and RCRS within deadlines, resolving data edits and ensuring compliance with state and national requirements.
- 6Prepare routine and ad-hoc registry reports for oncology leadership and accrediting bodies, highlighting data quality and compliance metrics.
- 7Partner with the Cancer Registry Coordinator to refine QA workflows, documenting findings to drive continuous improvement in abstraction practices.
- 8Complete NCRA-approved continuing education to stay current on cancer registry standards, sharing updates with the team.
Requirements9
- 15+ years of cancer registry abstraction experience in a CoC-accredited facility
- 2Bachelor's Degree in Arts or Science
- 3FCDS Abstractor Code (or obtained within one month of hire)
- 4ODS-C certification required
- 5Experience with FCDS IDEA, cancer registry software, EMR, and Excel for data submission and reporting
- 6Advanced knowledge of COC, FCDS, NAACCR, AJCC, ICD-O, SEER, and STORE standards
- 7Proven experience developing and delivering education to adult learners
- 8Skill in interpreting operative, pathology, radiology, laboratory, and autopsy documentation
- 9Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with attention to detail
