Blood Bank Technologist, ASCP Certified
Overview
You will own transfusion testing and compatibility processes at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, a major RWJBarnabas Health facility. You'll execute and verify Blood Bank assays, operate LIS and automated instrumentation, and deliver results that drive diagnosis and treatment across the care continuum. This role places you on the evening shift (2p-10p, one weekend per month) within a collaborative lab team. What You'll Do10
- 1Perform routine, complex, and specialized Blood Bank testing, including type and screen, antibody ID, and crossmatch protocols
- 2Analyze, verify, and report accurate test results using the LIS (Laboratory Information System) and supportive instrumentation
- 3Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot Blood Bank analyzers and equipment to maintain optimal performance
- 4Execute and document quality control, proficiency testing, and corrective actions aligned with CLIA and CAP standards
- 5Review specimen integrity and resolve quantity, labeling, or clot issues before testing
- 6Communicate critical values and urgent findings to physicians and nursing staff within the required turnaround time
- 7Maintain inventory of reagents, antisera, and consumables to prevent workflow interruptions
- 8Collaborate with pathologists and multidisciplinary teams on complex transfusion cases and clinical consultations
- 9Participate in training, competency assessments, and process improvement initiatives to elevate laboratory quality
- 10Document all testing, maintenance, and QC activities per regulatory and departmental policies
Requirements9
- 1Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical science from an accredited institution
- 2ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Blood Bank Technologist
- 31+ year experience in a hospital laboratory, preferred but not required
- 4Knowledge of specialized Blood Bank principles, including antibody identification and component therapy
- 5Ability to operate Blood Bank analyzers and LIS with precision
- 6Working knowledge of CLIA and CAP regulations for transfusion services
- 7Strong analytical skills to interpret test results and recognize unexpected findings
- 8Effective communication to coordinate with clinical teams and report critical values
- 9Availability to work evening shift (2p-10p) including one weekend per month
