BAS Technician, HVAC Controls & Building Automation
Overview
You will own the full life cycle of small-scale HVAC and building automation projects at NSF Indian Head, MD, from concept through completion. You will install, program, and troubleshoot BAS systems, perform routine maintenance on HVAC and electrical equipment, and respond to emergency requests. Working on a multidisciplinary federal facilities team, you will collaborate with ERG engineers and technicians across Fairfax and Arlington offices. This role stands out for its direct impact on naval facility operations and the requirement for 5+ years of hands-on controls experience or a relevant license.
What You'll Do8
- 1Install BAS control systems, including sensors, actuators, and controllers, and program them for optimal HVAC performance.
- 2Troubleshoot and diagnose faults in HVAC, electrical, and low-voltage control systems, repairing or replacing defective components within 90 days.
- 3Conduct site visits to document existing facility conditions and develop new requirements for maintenance and repair projects.
- 4Prepare technical memos and reports that document facility conditions, project status, and compliance with applicable codes.
- 5Respond to emergency maintenance requests and resolve critical issues to minimize downtime.
- 6Perform routine preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, following schedules and maintaining records.
- 7Maintain accurate work orders, preventive maintenance schedules, equipment inventory, and time sheets.
- 8Ensure all facilities meet federal, state, and local codes, including OSHA regulations, and coordinate with inspectors as needed.
Requirements8
- 15+ years experience in building automation or HVAC controls without license, or 2+ years with EPA Refrigerant Reclamation and Recovery Certification.
- 2High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in facilities maintenance or engineering preferred.
- 3Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings and digital graphic logic.
- 4Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical components.
- 5Hands-on experience with BAS systems, including programming and troubleshooting.
- 6Familiarity with state and local building codes and OSHA regulations.
- 7Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret clearance.
- 8Ability to lift objects up to 100 pounds and perform physical tasks including climbing ladders and working at heights up to 30 feet.
