Automation Technician - Night Shift - Flex Chicago
Overview
As an Automation Technician on the night shift, you will own the reliability and uptime of automated production equipment on a designated line, ensuring safe and efficient manufacturing at Flex in Buffalo Grove. You will troubleshoot robots, conveyors, vision systems, and automated assembly stations, performing preventive maintenance and rapid root-cause analysis to minimize downtime. Working within a cross-functional team of engineering and production, you will drive continuous improvement and document all repairs. This role offers hands-on exposure to advanced automation and a clear path for technical growth in a global manufacturing leader.
What You'll Do8
- 1Maintain and troubleshoot automated production equipment, including robots, conveyors, vision systems, and automated assembly/test stations, to ensure uptime and throughput.
- 2Respond to equipment downtime incidents, diagnose root cause, and implement immediate fixes to restore production within the first 90 days.
- 3Verify proper operation of safety interlocks, light curtains, E-Stops, and guarding to maintain a safe work environment.
- 4Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on automation equipment, including sensors, pneumatics, motors, drives, and servo systems.
- 5Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend permanent corrective actions to reduce repeat failures.
- 6Participate in root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive action activities, documenting all repairs and maintenance activities.
- 7Support training of operators and maintenance personnel on safe and effective use of automated systems.
- 8Collaborate with engineering and production teams to optimize equipment performance and support daily production targets.
Requirements8
- 1Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent experience in Automation, Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronics, or Industrial Technology.
- 22+ years experience supporting automated manufacturing equipment in a production environment.
- 3Hands-on experience with sensors, pneumatics, motors, drives, and servo systems.
- 4Proficiency with industrial HMIs and automation hardware.
- 5Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and control diagrams.
- 6Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- 7Ability to work independently under production pressure and communicate effectively with teams.
- 8Team-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset.
