Assistant Manager Animal Care and Adoptions
Overview
You will lead daily operations in our dog kennel and cat adoption areas, coaching young adults in our job-training program while ensuring top-tier care for every animal. Reporting to the Animal Care & Adoptions Manager, you will split time between hands-on care and mentoring, modeling best practices in canine and feline handling. Our team applies a strengths-based approach, and you will implement our Competency-Based Job Skills Tracking Program. This role offers the chance to shape both animal welfare and youth development in a supportive nonprofit setting.
What You'll Do10
- 1Model safe, humane handling in the kennel and cat spaces while coaching program participants in real time.
- 2Document participant progress in our Competency-Based Job Skills Tracking Program and adjust coaching to support growth.
- 3Own daily kennel and cat adoption operations: feeding, cleaning, exercise, socialization, enrichment, and medical monitoring.
- 4Conduct health checks and coordinate veterinary care with the Manager, flagging concerns early.
- 5Lead animal intake and adoptions: source from shelters, run temperament assessments, counsel adopters, and complete transfers.
- 6Oversee individual care plans for each dog and cat, ensuring behavioral and physical needs are met daily.
- 7Track and reorder supplies for feeding, cleaning, and medical needs, keeping spaces optimized.
- 8Recruit and coordinate foster families, and connect community members with resources for lost or surrendered pets.
- 9Create adoption marketing content for social media and support volunteer training for enrichment activities.
- 10Maintain accurate records in Shelter Animals Count and our internal databases, supporting policy updates and post-adoption follow-ups.
Requirements8
- 12+ years of professional experience in an animal care role, with a strong grasp of canine and feline behavior.
- 21+ year of supervisory experience, ideally with young adults or at-risk populations.
- 3Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 40 lbs in a physically active role.
- 4Working knowledge of Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms).
- 5Fluent understanding of animal communication and body language.
- 6Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 7Program development, animal training, or teaching/coaching experience preferred.
- 8Passion for connecting people and animals in meaningful ways.
