Volunteer Program Specialist, Nonprofit Animal Shelter
Overview
You will own day-to-day operations of the Volunteer Program at The Animal Foundation, supporting a team of hundreds of volunteers in a high-volume shelter. You will collaborate with the Volunteer Program Manager and Coordinator to recruit, train, schedule, and retain volunteers. Your work directly boosts lifesaving efforts and creates a welcoming environment for staff and guests. You will also keep the volunteer database current and monitor daily staffing levels. This role is public-facing, requiring constant interaction with volunteers and visitors in a fast-paced shelter.
What You'll Do10
- 1Coordinate with the Volunteer Program Manager to implement program goals and policies, ensuring alignment with the shelter's mission.
- 2Support the Volunteer Program Coordinator in assessing organizational volunteer needs and filling open roles across departments.
- 3Set a positive tone for volunteers and staff, reinforcing a culture of collaboration and appreciation throughout the organization.
- 4Manage volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, and scheduling, using the volunteer database to track assignments and hours.
- 5Monitor daily volunteer schedules to guarantee adequate staffing in all shelter areas, addressing coverage gaps as needed.
- 6Track volunteer attendance and ensure accurate hour logs, escalating issues to the Volunteer Manager when necessary.
- 7Follow proper protocols for addressing volunteer concerns, providing guidance and support to maintain a safe, engaging environment.
- 8Offer suggestions to improve guest service and participate actively as a member of the community engagement team.
- 9Serve guests and volunteers with compassionate, responsive service, handling inquiries in person, by email, or by phone.
- 10Perform other duties as assigned to support the shelter's operations and lifesaving goals.
Requirements10
- 1High school diploma or equivalent.
- 21+ year experience in a volunteer program or 3+ years in a customer service setting.
- 3Valid driver's license with 3+ years of driving history and an acceptable record.
- 4Knowledge of volunteer program management principles and training techniques.
- 5Proficiency with standard office software and record-keeping systems.
- 6Strong oral and written communication skills, with tact in handling public interactions.
- 7Ability to work with diverse groups, including youth, schools, businesses, and community partners.
- 8Skill in conflict resolution and dealing with challenging situations.
- 9Capability to lift up to 25 pounds and work in an environment with animal exposure and cleaning chemicals.
- 10Availability to work in both indoor and outdoor conditions, withstanding loud noise and temperature extremes.
