Own the national messaging and brand for a leading democracy advocacy nonprofit. Scale external communications across digital, media relations, and campaigns with a digital-first mindset. Lead cross-functional teams and coordinate with Policy & Litigation, Campaigns & Organizing, and State departments to align national priorities with state efforts. Build rapid-response and innovative outreach to mobilize supporters and defend democracy.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Lead the marketing and communications strategy to expand external audience reach across national and state campaigns
  • 2Oversee digital, media relations, messaging, graphic design, and content creation within the External Affairs function
  • 3Build and manage rapid-response systems to mobilize around breaking news and policy developments
  • 4Coach and develop direct reports to achieve goals and advance careers within Common Cause
  • 5Represent Common Cause in coalition meetings and align national priorities with state initiatives
  • 6Guide the transition to a fully digital-first communications model and test new channels and messaging
  • 7Advise senior leaders on opportunities, risks, and emerging developments
  • 8Maintain clear, proactive communication across Policy & Litigation, Campaigns & Organizing, and State departments
  • 9Establish team structures, workflows, and cross-department processes for seamless execution
  • 10Foster an inclusive, accountable culture and measure impact across the team

Requirements10

  • 1Proven track record leading high-performing communications and/or digital teams in nonprofit advocacy or private sector
  • 2Experience leading successful marketing campaigns related to democracy and civil rights
  • 3Demonstrated knowledge of national and state media outlets with existing relationships
  • 4Understanding of current national democracy issues such as voting rights and redistricting
  • 5Experience building and directing a multi-disciplinary team and setting strategic direction
  • 6History of driving organization-wide change initiatives and achieving goals
  • 7Ability to work in-person in the DC office at least 2 days per week and travel 3-4 times per year
  • 8Willingness to maintain a social media presence on behalf of Common Cause
  • 9Commitment to nonpartisan governance and civil rights advocacy
  • 10Strong communication skills and ability to tailor messages for diverse stakeholders
