Veterinary Technician, Fear-Free Care & Surgical Support
Overview
As a Veterinary Technician, you will own the complete technical care cycle: from blood draws and IV catheter placement to surgical monitoring and client education in a busy San Diego practice. You will work alongside a team of doctors and fellow technicians to deliver fear-free experiences for every patient, upholding the hospital's mission of compassionate care. Your role includes maintaining accurate medical records, preparing exam rooms, and guiding clients through preventive care and treatment plans. What You'll Do10
- 1Place IV catheters using sterile technique and manage fluid therapy for surgical and hospitalized patients.
- 2Monitor anesthesia and vital signs during surgical procedures, adjusting pain management and reporting changes to the veterinarian.
- 3Administer SQ, IM, and IV injections, and perform blood draws for diagnostic testing.
- 4Prepare and read skin cytology, skin scrapes, and ear cytology, providing results to the veterinarian.
- 5Capture diagnostic radiographs for routine studies, positioning patients correctly for clear imaging.
- 6Educate clients on vaccination protocols, preventive medications, and common medical conditions, tailoring explanations to their understanding.
- 7Admit and discharge patients per hospital policy, ensuring they are well-groomed and medically stable for release.
- 8Maintain legible medical records in accordance with hospital policy, documenting all treatments and observations.
- 9Restrain pets safely, including large or fractious animals, using fear-free handling techniques.
- 10Respond to client questions with confidence, escalating concerns to veterinarians when appropriate and explaining follow-up care instructions.
Requirements10
- 11+ year of veterinary technician experience in a clinical setting.
- 2Controlled Substance Permit or ability to obtain one.
- 3Fear Free Certified (preferred).
- 4Proficient in IV catheter placement and phlebotomy.
- 5Knowledge of common vaccinations, preventive medications, and their side effects.
- 6Experience with surgical monitoring and anesthesia equipment.
- 7Ability to perform radiography positioning and image capture.
- 8Strong client communication skills, able to explain medical concepts clearly.
- 9Reliable and punctual, with a commitment to hospital core values.
- 10Capable of working 4 x 10-hour shifts or 5 x 8-hour shifts, including Saturday rotation.
