Utility Maintenance Worker, Water & Wastewater Systems
Overview
You own the repair and maintenance of Lincoln County's water distribution and wastewater collection systems, serving thousands of residents. You respond to customer complaints, locate leaks, repair main breaks, and diagnose electrical issues on pumps and control panels. You work alongside a small crew, reporting to the Utility Maintenance Crew Leader, and coordinate with contractors, vendors, and property owners daily. This role stands out with 5+ years of field experience and the opportunity to earn a Class B CDL and state water/wastewater licenses on the job.
What You'll Do10
- 1Respond to customer complaints and resolve water or sewer issues within 24 hours.
- 2Install tap service connections and meters, ensuring accurate billing and flow.
- 3Locate and repair leaks in main supply lines, minimizing water loss and service disruption.
- 4Maintain hydrants and valves, verifying operational readiness for fire suppression.
- 5Diagnose electrical problems on control panels and pumps, rewiring or replacing components as needed.
- 6Monitor lift stations, adjusting controls and replacing pumps, float switches, and wiring to prevent overflows.
- 7Operate backhoe, dump truck, vacuum truck, and boring machine for excavation and repair tasks.
- 8Locate underground water and sewer lines using electronic locators, avoiding damage to other utilities.
- 9Respond to after-hours emergencies, restoring service and ensuring public safety.
- 10Maintain vehicle and equipment readiness, performing daily inspections and minor repairs.
Requirements9
- 11-2 years experience in water or wastewater maintenance, ideally through an apprenticeship or similar role.
- 2High school diploma or equivalent, plus specialized training in utility maintenance or related field.
- 3Valid NC Driver's License and ability to obtain Class B CDL.
- 4Possession or ability to obtain NCWTFOCB Grade C Water Distribution License.
- 5Possession or ability to obtain WPCSOCC Grade I Collections License.
- 6Knowledge of OSHA safety procedures and DOT guidelines for utility work.
- 7Skill in operating hand and power tools, including pipe wrenches, cutters, and drills.
- 8Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
- 9Basic computer skills for inventory tracking and work order documentation.
