Utility Person, Water Distribution & Maintenance
Overview
You will inspect, operate, and maintain water distribution and collection systems for American Water, the largest regulated water utility in the US, serving 14 million people. You will join a union-represented team of 7,000 professionals in Pittsburgh, PA, and respond to customer service issues, perform repairs, and ensure system reliability. This role offers a competitive hourly rate of $31.83, with opportunities for annual incentive pay and benefit packages including 401(k) and health coverage. What You'll Do10
- 1Inspect and operate water mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines to ensure system integrity.
- 2Troubleshoot and repair distribution systems, including manholes and service laterals, within the first 90 days.
- 3Respond to customer service inquiries, diagnosing service disruptions and grinder pump malfunctions.
- 4Install new service taps and maintain accurate records of all installations and repairs.
- 5Monitor plant operations and adjust equipment settings to control water flow and pressure.
- 6Complete field notes, sketches, and maps to document system changes and maintenance.
- 7Maintain tools and work equipment, ensuring readiness for daily operations.
- 8Perform facility mark-outs per Pennsylvania One-Call regulations to prevent utility strikes.
- 9Support light construction and custodial duties to keep facilities and grounds safe.
- 10Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation and overtime as required.
Requirements8
- 1GED or high school diploma, or state-recognized equivalency certificate.
- 2Valid PA Driver's License and PA DOT Certification required.
- 3Mechanical ability to understand pumps, valves, motors, and related equipment.
- 4Working knowledge of water distribution and collection systems.
- 5Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, digging, and operating tools.
- 6Willingness to work in all weather conditions and respond to emergency call-outs.
- 7Basic math and record-keeping skills for accurate documentation.
- 8Strong communication skills for customer interactions and team coordination.
