Overview

You will direct traffic at construction sites across Charlotte, controlling vehicle flow with a stop/slow paddle. You join a crew of 2-4 Protectors, coordinated by a Field Supervisor, and receive paid training and a traffic safety certificate in your first week. No experience or degree is needed: AWP Safety hires for character and trains for skill. This role builds a career path to Senior Protector, Lead Protector, and Field Supervisor roles.

What You'll Do7

  • 1Set up cones, signs, and barricades before work begins, then take down traffic control equipment after each shift.
  • 2Guide traffic with a stop/slow paddle, watching both vehicle and pedestrian flow to keep job sites safe.
  • 3Follow all safety rules taught in training, including staying alert around moving traffic at all times.
  • 4Communicate with your crew and supervisor via walkie talkie to coordinate lane closures and equipment moves.
  • 5Clean and inspect vehicles and equipment, reporting any damage or safety hazards to the supervisor.
  • 6Stand or walk for 8-12 hours per shift in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
  • 7Move cones and barrels weighing up to 40-50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day.

Requirements8

  • 13-5 months of experience in traffic control or a related field, or completion of AWP's paid training program.
  • 2Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites in the Charlotte area.
  • 3Ability to stand, walk, and work outside for long periods in changing weather conditions.
  • 4Ability to lift and carry 40-50 pounds of equipment, including cones and barricades.
  • 5Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs.
  • 6Must pass pre-hire screening, including a drug test and background check, due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
  • 7Strong attention to detail and commitment to following all safety protocols without exception.
  • 8Effective communication skills to coordinate with crew members and interact politely with the public.
