What You'll Do7
- 1Assist the surgeon during operative procedures by retracting tissues, controlling bleeding, and suturing as directed, ensuring optimal exposure and patient safety.
- 2Prepare the operating room by verifying equipment function, sterile supplies, and patient positioning before each surgery.
- 3Apply knowledge of anatomy and surgical technique to anticipate the surgeon's needs and respond promptly during critical moments.
- 4Handle surgical instruments and specimens with precision, maintaining the sterile field and documenting accurately.
- 5Collaborate with the nursing and anesthesia teams to coordinate patient care, from pre-operative preparation to intraoperative support.
- 6Participate in surgical time-outs and verify patient identity, procedure, and site per hospital protocol.
- 7Monitor patient vitals and report any changes to the surgical team, assisting with emergency interventions as needed.
Requirements8
- 1Licensed Surgical Assistant by the Virginia Department of Health Professions, required.
- 23+ years of operating room experience, preferred.
- 3Graduation from an accredited program for First Assistants, preferred.
- 4Certified in Surgical Assisting, preferred.
- 5Satisfaction of education requirements for licensure as a Surgical Assistant per Virginia Department of Health.
- 6Ability to retrieve, communicate, and present information in written, auditory, or visual form.
- 7Manual dexterity and physical stamina to stand for extended periods and assist in surgery.
- 8Strong interpretive and consultative skills to interact effectively with surgical teams and patients.
