Overview

This role drives structural biology research at UCSF's Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, isolating disease-relevant filaments from patient tissue to decipher the molecular basis of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and related disorders. Working with Stanley Prusiner's team, you'll prepare samples for TEM and fluorescence microscopy using state-of-the-art cryo-EM instruments like the Titan Krios G4 and Glacios. You'll support drug discovery by applying biochemical and cell biological techniques, collaborating across disciplines to advance understanding of protein ultrastructures. This position offers hands-on access to Nobel-level research infrastructure and direct mentorship from senior investigators.

What You'll Do8

  • 1Isolate disease-relevant filaments from patient tissue and other systems to support structural characterization.
  • 2Prepare samples for TEM and fluorescence microscopy to aid in protein ultrastructure analysis.
  • 3Operate and maintain cryo-EM instruments including Titan Krios G4, Glacios, and L120C for data collection.
  • 4Perform protein purification and biochemistry experiments to support drug discovery efforts.
  • 5Maintain mammalian cell cultures and adhere to biological safety protocols.
  • 6Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate structural findings into broader research goals.
  • 7Document experimental procedures and results for internal reports and publications.
  • 8Receive training and guidance from senior investigators to develop specialized skills in cryo-EM.

Requirements9

  • 1BA/BS in Biochemistry or related biological science, or 4+ years of research experience (Junior Specialist level).
  • 2Master's degree or BA/BS with 3+ years research experience (Assistant Specialist level).
  • 32+ years of laboratory experience in protein purification, biochemistry, cell biology, or microscopy.
  • 4Hands-on experience with transmission electron microscopy sample preparation or imaging.
  • 5Proficiency in confocal or cryo-confocal fluorescence microscopy.
  • 6Experience with cell sorting techniques.
  • 7Maintain mammalian cell cultures and follow biological safety protocols.
  • 8Computer literacy on Macintosh and PC, including MS-Office and statistical software.
  • 9Excellent oral and written communication skills for collaborative research environment.
