Staff Firmware Engineer - Embedded SoC/DSP
Overview
Own the embedded firmware for Marvell's ODSP PHY SW Team, the market leader in direct-detect optical DSPs from 100G to 1.6T. You will design, develop, and test C firmware controlling complex DSP hardware in pluggable optical modules used in every major cloud data center and AI cluster. Work with RISC-V multi-core MCUs, a customer SDK written in C, and a Python-based GUI. This role combines technical leadership with project coordination, ensuring product success from pre-silicon simulation through field deployment.
What You'll Do10
- 1Architect and develop embedded C firmware for memory-constrained RISC-V multicore MCUs controlling complex DSP hardware.
- 2Drive firmware development for DSP control blocks, including RX/TX signal processing, FEC, PLL/FLL, reference generation, and thermal monitoring.
- 3Translate specifications from standards bodies (MSA/OIF/CMIS) and customers into clear requirements and sequence diagrams.
- 4Debug and resolve issues to root cause with HW/Systems teams, and support test, validation, and customer support teams.
- 5Plan SW milestones, develop in sprints, close tickets, and roll out features in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- 6Coordinate with Marketing, AE, Test, Validation, SW_QA, and Hardware teams to align on deliverables and schedules.
- 7Provide regular status updates on milestones, scope, dependencies, and blockers across the product lifecycle.
- 8Manage Agile sprint planning and backlog prioritization with stakeholders, ensuring technical alignment.
- 9Engage in technical discussions with tier-1 customers on feature requirements and API specifications.
- 10Support customer bring-up and resolve field issues, including customer-specific features like FEC burst statistics and CMIS compliance.
Requirements10
- 15+ years of experience in memory-constrained embedded C/C++ firmware development.
- 2Experience in architecture design, development, code reviews, and testing through to customer volume production.
- 3Understanding of embedded SoC, microcontroller architecture (RISC-V a plus), memory-mapped hardware interfaces, GPIOs, and ISRs.
- 4Excellent verbal and written communication in English, with ability to collaborate in a large cross-functional organization.
- 5Experience with SERDES, IM-DD/Coherent DSP, Ethernet/PCIe PHYs, and/or optical module software.
- 6Experience designing and debugging software state machines, transitions, context saving, and error handling.
- 7Experience with mixed-signal control and monitoring, PID/feedback loop control.
- 8Proficiency in C and Python, with knowledge of git, Linux, makefiles, gdb, IDEs, and bash.
- 9Familiarity with digital verification test flows, FPGA emulation, and hardware languages such as Verilog.
- 10BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electrical/Software Engineering, or related field.
