Special Education Teacher Aide, Youth In Transition School
Overview
You will own academic and behavioral support for students at the Youth In Transition (YIT) School, a program of the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives (NCIA) in Baltimore, MD. You will work side-by-side with teachers to keep learning alive and maintain a safe, positive classroom. Some team members provide one-on-one support to a single student, becoming their first connection each morning and their steady guide all day. Every shift, your presence sets the tone for a student's entire day. You will use trauma-informed strategies to help students feel seen, capable, and supported. What You'll Do8
- 1Support students one-on-one and in small groups during lessons to reinforce learning and keep them engaged.
- 2Reinforce positive behavior using approved, trauma-informed strategies and de-escalation techniques.
- 3Help students navigate transitions, emotional moments, and daily challenges with calm confidence.
- 4Provide structure, supervision, and encouragement throughout the school day.
- 5Collect academic and behavioral data to track student progress and adjust support.
- 6Participate in team debriefs to reflect, problem-solve, and improve outcomes.
- 7Step in with de-escalation or redirection when students need extra support.
- 8For focused support roles: escort the student safely throughout the building, track behaviors, and help implement individualized behavior plans.
Requirements10
- 12+ years of experience working with students with special needs.
- 2Bachelor's degree preferred; relevant experience may substitute.
- 3Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- 4Ability to follow safety procedures and behavior plans precisely.
- 5Basic math and data interpretation skills to track progress.
- 6Strong judgment and ability to follow instructions in dynamic situations.
- 7Physical ability to walk, stand, use stairs, and lift 15–20 lbs.
- 8Willingness to perform approved TCI physical interventions when needed.
- 9Commitment to confidentiality and ethical conduct.
