
Senior Observability Engineer, Elastic Cloud & Monitoring
Overview
You will own the observability strategy for a high-traffic distributed platform, analyzing the current Elastic Cloud deployment and closing monitoring gaps. You will work with platform and application teams to implement end-to-end telemetry across cloud-native services. This contract role in McLean, VA requires deep Elastic expertise and a track record of scaling monitoring solutions.
What You'll Do8
- 1Audit the existing Elastic Cloud deployment to identify coverage gaps and document findings.
- 2Design and implement end-to-end observability for Kubernetes and microservices using Elastic APM and Beats.
- 3Ship custom dashboards and alerts in Kibana to surface critical SLIs across teams.
- 4Drive migration of legacy monitoring to the ELK Stack, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
- 5Collaborate with SREs to define service-level objectives and error budgets, then instrument code accordingly.
- 6Build automated health checks for cloud infrastructure using Terraform and Python.
- 7Produce runbooks and training materials to increase monitoring self-service across engineering.
- 8Optimize Elasticsearch index mapping and retention to reduce cost while preserving query performance.
Requirements6
- 15+ years in observability engineering, with 3+ years hands-on Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana, Beats).
- 22+ years experience with Elastic Cloud and large-scale index management.
- 33+ years building monitoring for Kubernetes and containerized workloads using Prometheus and Grafana.
- 4Strong scripting ability in Python or Go for automation and integration.
- 5Experience with AWS services (EC2, S3, CloudWatch) and Terraform for infrastructure as code.
- 6Excellent communication skills to document gaps and present recommendations to stakeholders.
