Senior Controls Engineer, Industrial Automation & Motion Control
Overview
You will own the industrial control systems for Stack Forging machines at Johnson Controls, designing and implementing high-performance thermal management solutions that power AI, HPC, and mission-critical systems. You will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers who value collaboration and a hands-on approach, working from concept to commissioning on complex machines. What You'll Do7
- 1Design and implement industrial control systems for Stack Forging machines, covering high-speed laser cutting, precision hydraulic, and temperature control.
- 2Specify and select hardware including real-time motion controllers, PLCs, motor drivers, AC power components, and safety interlocks.
- 3Write and maintain IO lists, state diagrams, and specifications for all machines.
- 4Design control and power cables, generate run lists, and select components for machine builds.
- 5Collaborate with third-party vendors to design, build, and troubleshoot systems.
- 6Contribute to failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and risk assessments for machine safety.
- 7Work cross-functionally with stakeholders from multiple systems to gather input and push the envelope of what's possible.
Requirements10
- 15+ years of industry experience with industrial automation and controls.
- 2Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- 3Hands-on experience designing and specifying servo control systems.
- 4Proficiency in designing panel schematics, panel layouts, IO lists, and state flows.
- 5Experience with robotics, industrial machinery, or automation.
- 6Experience using industrial communication protocols such as EtherCAT, OPC UA, CANOpen, or ModbusTCP.
- 7Programming experience with Python, C/C++, C#, Java, or PLC-based controls.
- 8Familiarity with relay logic for equipment and personnel safety interlocks.
- 9Understanding of PID and other closed-loop control theories for mechanical and thermal systems.
- 10Practical understanding of P&ID drawings.
