Controls Engineer, PLC & Automation Systems
Overview
Own the controls engineering lifecycle for industrial automation projects in the Portland metro, spending 70% on PLC programming and 30% on electrical design. You will program, debug, and commission PLC-based systems across Siemens, Mitsubishi, and Allen Bradley platforms, integrating robotics, machine vision, and motion control into custom manufacturing equipment. Work alongside senior controls engineers in a hands-on lab environment, supporting 1-3 projects from concept through startup. This role builds your depth in automation and controls while mentoring you toward technical leadership.
What You'll Do10
- 1Program, modify, and debug PLC-based control systems for automation equipment using Siemens, Mitsubishi, and Allen Bradley platforms.
- 2Develop new PLC programs from scratch and update existing code to support system changes and improvements.
- 3Configure I/O, tune control logic, and commission automation equipment to ensure reliable and safe operation.
- 4Troubleshoot automation systems during build, testing, debugging, and startup to resolve controls and electrical issues.
- 5Select controls components including sensors, motors, drives, relays, and safety devices.
- 6Create and modify electrical schematics and control panel drawings using AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorks Electrical.
- 7Review electrical designs for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with standards like UL 508A and NFPA 79.
- 8Integrate robotics, machine vision, and motion control into custom manufacturing equipment.
- 9Support 1-3 projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks across competing deadlines and shifting between initiatives.
- 10Participate in machine builds and system bring-up at customer sites with minimal travel.
Requirements10
- 15+ years of controls engineering experience with focus on PLC programming and automation integration.
- 2Hands-on PLC programming experience, creating programs from scratch and modifying existing code.
- 3Proficiency with Siemens and Mitsubishi PLC platforms, plus Allen Bradley experience is beneficial.
- 4Ability to configure I/O, debug PLC logic, and commission automation equipment.
- 5Strong skill in reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- 6Experience with HMI programming and integration within automated systems.
- 7Exposure to robotics integration using Universal Robots or Epson robots.
- 8Familiarity with machine vision systems and vision programming for automated inspection.
- 9Knowledge of servo systems, motion control, and industrial networks.
- 10BSEE or equivalent with demonstrated experience in electrical and controls engineering.
