Senior Backend Engineer (Python, AWS)
Overview
You will design the distributed systems that carry Brellium from 100k to 1M+ sessions per day, owning reliability, observability, and performance in a Python and AWS stack. You will join a Series A team of 20 engineers and product leaders, reporting to the CTO, and work with Kubernetes, Terraform, and Kafka to build infrastructure that scales without breaking. This role stands apart because you will directly shape the architecture that supports AI-powered medical review for 250,000+ providers across the U.S., with a clear mandate to reduce technical debt and operational bottlenecks.
What You'll Do8
- 1Design and evolve distributed systems to support 10x growth in session volume, focusing on throughput and fault tolerance.
- 2Build scalable data pipelines using Python and AWS services like Kinesis and S3 to process streaming clinical data.
- 3Strengthen observability by implementing Prometheus and Grafana dashboards, setting SLOs, and automating incident response.
- 4Reduce operational bottlenecks by automating deployment with Terraform and containerizing services in Kubernetes.
- 5Debug production issues across the stack, from API gateways to database queries, and implement fixes that last.
- 6Drive performance improvements in PostgreSQL and Redis by optimizing query patterns and cache strategies.
- 7Collaborate with AI and product teams to ensure backend systems can support new capabilities like real-time risk scoring.
- 8Cut technical debt by refactoring critical services and introducing robust testing and CI/CD practices.
Requirements7
- 15+ years of professional software engineering with a backend/infrastructure focus.
- 2Expertise in Python and AWS infrastructure, including EC2, RDS, and Lambda.
- 3Proven experience building and scaling data-intensive applications and pipelines.
- 4Strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, and database internals.
- 5Track record of improving system reliability and performance in production.
- 6Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
- 7Experience with infrastructure as code, such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
