Overview
Mercor is seeking experienced public interest attorneys to help train AI systems in the nuanced fields of civil rights, environmental, and advocacy law. In this remote, hourly role, you'll design evaluation scenarios, draft reference legal documents, and build scoring rubrics that capture how senior public interest lawyers actually reason through complex cases. The work is split into two tracks—US law (federal civil rights statutes, NEPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act) and international law (human rights treaties, EU environmental directives)—and experts in either or both areas are welcome. What sets this apart: you're not practicing law directly, but building the standards that teach AI to think like a public interest lawyer.
What You'll Do5
- 1Develop detailed, realistic scenarios that reflect the complexities of civil rights litigation, environmental enforcement, and community advocacy.
- 2Create evaluation tasks covering civil rights, environmental regulation, housing, consumer protection, immigration and asylum, and government accountability.
- 3Incorporate tools such as legal research platforms, case management systems used by legal aid groups, and regulatory filing systems (like EPA dockets) into task design.
- 4Apply public interest law methods—constitutional analysis, regulatory compliance review, impact litigation strategy—to craft reference legal briefs, regulatory comments, and advocacy memos.
- 5Write rubrics that distinguish authentic public interest legal judgment from generic law school or bar-exam-level knowledge.
Requirements4
- 1At least 5+ years of experience as a public interest attorney at a legal aid organization, advocacy nonprofit, or government agency (e.g., ACLU, Earthjustice, NRDC, Legal Aid Society, or a state attorney general's office).
- 2Direct ownership of impact litigation, regulatory advocacy, or policy reform initiatives.
- 3Fluency with the digital tools common in public interest legal work, and a working understanding of how regulatory processes and legislative advocacy actually operate.
- 4A JD with bar admission (or the international equivalent) is strongly preferred; prior experience designing rubrics, training materials, or policy papers is a plus.
