Product Development Engineer, FPGA Thermal & SLT Validation
Overview
You will own thermal characterization and System Level Test (SLT) for FPGA products at Altera, from silicon bring-up to high-volume manufacturing. You will develop and execute thermal plans to validate device performance across temperature ranges, correlating silicon data with simulations to close performance gaps. This role pivots on cross-functional partnership with design, packaging, test, and manufacturing teams to optimize product quality and output. You will set the standard for test-to-system correlation, driving yield and cost improvements on Altera's next-generation FPGA solutions.
What You'll Do11
- 1Develop and execute thermal characterization plans to evaluate FPGA device performance, reliability, and power behavior across operating temperatures.
- 2Perform thermal and electrical characterization, correlating silicon measurements against design and simulation models to validate specs.
- 3Analyze characterization data to identify performance limits, validate thermal specs, and drive fixes across design, package, cooling, and manufacturing.
- 4Lead SLT methodology development to correlate manufacturing test results with golden system performance, closing tester-to-system gaps and optimizing guardbands.
- 5Implement DFT strategies for FPGAs, including scan insertion, BIST, and test compression techniques.
- 6Partner with RTL design and verification teams to embed testability features early in the design cycle.
- 7Define and implement test plans, patterns, and fault models to maximize test coverage and yield.
- 8Build ATPG, MBIST, and manufacturing test content flows using Python and other scripting tools.
- 9Perform pre-silicon test pattern simulation to verify test effectiveness before tape-out.
- 10Debug silicon failures and drive root cause analysis, working with manufacturing to reduce test time and cost.
- 11Drive test hole closure by analyzing early customer returns and aligning tests to real-world failures.
Requirements8
- 14+ years in product engineering, silicon validation, or semiconductor characterization with a Bachelor's in EE, CE, Physics, or related field.
- 24+ years of thermal and/or electrical characterization experience, including developing plans, collecting data, and analyzing results across conditions.
- 3Proven record correlating silicon measurements with simulations or specs to validate performance, power, and reliability.
- 4Experience with SLT, production test, or post-silicon validation, including data analysis to improve test-to-system correlation.
- 5Hands-on with thermal chambers, voltage/temperature corner testing, and characterization methodologies for FPGA or ASIC products.
- 6Strong scripting skills in Python, Perl, or MATLAB for test automation and data analysis.
- 7Knowledge of semiconductor test flows, ATE correlation, guardband optimization, and yield analysis.
- 8Excellent cross-functional communication to work effectively with design, test, manufacturing, and packaging teams.
